There are many charitable organizations in Hong Kong. Have you ever considered the administration fees charged before making donations?
Redford Charitable Foundation is one of the few charitable organizations that adhere to the principle of “zero administration fee”.
The funds raised are used to help those who are less fortunate, alleviating their difficulties and giving assistance to people in need.

In order to raise more funds, Paula Mok, Chairlady of the Redford Charitable Foundation runs the organization with the principle of “zero administration fee”. She expressed her gratitude towards the committee members and volunteers for their continuous hard work and help. She said, “Redford Charitable Foundation is my home.”

Paula shared her previous donation experience, “whenever I made donations in the past, I only knew about the beneficiary organization, but I never knew whether all my donations would end up going to those who are in need. I was never able to track the donations.” Paula felt that she had been very fortunate to have earned support from her close friends and other organizations. The foundation was established three years ago. Since then, the foundation has gathered support from reputable charities and celebrities such as Wai Yin Association, Andy Hui Global Foundation Ltd., Mr. C.Y. Leung, Ms. Winnie Young, Ms. Angie Chiu, Ms. Joyce Lee, etc. ‘To give is better than to receive” is the notion that they believe in and they want to bring happiness and fortune to everyone.

In 2008, Paula founded the Redford Charitable Foundation with four other friends. She said, “I have always felt that I am a fortunate person. I want to share my luck with everyone. The establishment of this foundation allows me to know where exactly the funds raised will go to. Knowing that the funds raised will finally end up in the hands of people in need makes me feel satisfied and proud.” It has nearly been four years since the establishment of the foundation. Redford Charitable Foundation endeavors to serve the community with special focus on elderly and children. Redford organizes one to two large-scale functions every year. The funds raised would be sent to Mainland China for building schools in poor villages. One of their main goals is to rebuild a dilapidated school every year. Paula continued, “Until now, the organization has helped build four primary schools in Mainland China which include Guangxi, Xinjiang, Jiangxi and Guizhou. We tore down the dilapidated schools and made arrangements for teachers and students to continue education under temporary shelters. After the school is rebuilt, students could continue their study in a safer and better environment.”

Helping elderly and children, Sharing happiness and fortune

Paula and her committee members all agreed that children are pillars and center of societal development. They believe that education could change one’s life and future development. Therefore, children are their first priority among all other people in need.  By building schools, more children will benefit.  Paula said, “We want to help as many people as possible each time. The beneficiaries can go up to two/three hundred children every time we build a new school.” Other funds raised would be sent to different organizations in Hong Kong including Children’s Cancer Foundation, Hong Kong PHAB Association, Heep Hong Society, Playright Children’s Play Association, The Community Chest of Hong Kong, UNICEF and Pathways.  Paula also pointed out that many disabled children in Hong Kong have missed their golden opportunity to study due to insufficient learning quota. Redford now intends to cooperate with other organizations to start a kindergarten for these disabled children, in the hope of helping as many children as possible.

Apart from children, Redford Charitable Foundation also targets at helping elderly who live alone. The elderly have been working so hard throughout their lives and it is time for the society to contribute to them. Redford organized three to four visits to the elderly annually. Paula encouraged people to bring their children along to these visits so that the children know how fortunate they are. She said, “I also brought my own kids to the visits. There were a couple of times the six/seven-year-old children initiated to offer their lai see packets received during the Chinese New Year to buy gifts for the elderly when they saw the poor living environment. The children need to experience different people’s lives in order to know how fortunate they are and to learn the importance of sharing. These are all invaluable experience for children.”

Since its establishment, Redford Charitable Foundation has organized various activities such as charity dinners, visits to the elderly, fundraising musical evening, rice and mooncake distribution, etc. The most memorable event, according to Paula, was the ‘Take a Step for Children’ Charity Walk co-organized by Wai Yin Association. Paula recalled, “Fundraising was a big challenge to us during the economic downturn.” Nonetheless, the result was a surprise to them. The funds raised were more than expected. Paula believed that no matter how difficult the fundraising might be, as long as they hold on to the belief of helping others, all obstacles would be cleared.

Receiving the award for Outstanding Society Contribution is definitely an inspiration to them. “The establishment of this foundation is to gather more people to do charitable work. I never thought that our low-profile work would have drawn any attention. I am glad that we are given this award”, said Paula. Regarding future development, Paula wants to spread the joy and luck to other places in the world. “I hope that the donations received can help people in need in South East Asia and other parts of the world. I would also like to thank all my committee members, celebrities, guests, volunteers and sponsors. Thank you all for going great lengths for charity.”

Part of the funds raised from this event will be used to rebuild a dilapidated school in Guizhou, China through “Care Action Hong Kong” and to support “Heep Hong Society” with one of their pressing projects to help children with special needs in Hong Kong.  Any surplus will be donated to various local charities.
